Yet while we celebrate the successes, we sometimes forget to wait for the people who are struggling. They matter too.

The fourth city in the UK for homelessness, rising levels of domestic abuse, anxious students in schools. We sometimes forget that any city is the sum of its parts and that for every celebrity and silicon beach start-up there is a rough sleeper, a victim of domestic abuse and a child afraid or unable to go to school.

The last 12 months has made the divide between rich and poor wider and starker. The economic and social impact has been felt most by those least able to cope.

We have responded by boosting our efforts in every area of the charity to compensate for the additional numbers and areas of help needed. We are moving into a new realm of growing inequality and both physical and mental suffering. Our front line has moved closer to each and every one of us. That person we kneel alongside could be your relative, your neighbour or your friend - and in the future, it could be you.
