Silence the voice of fear this winter.
In a world filled with constant noise, endless information, and competing voices, it can be difficult to find peace. We are bombarded by the latest trends, social media updates and mounting responsibilities. However, for many people facing poverty, homelessness, poor mental health, or isolation in our city, the loudest voice is often fear.
Fear of where they will sleep tonight.
Fear of how they will pay their bills.
Fear of opening a letter, answering a phone call, or facing another day of uncertainty.
Fear can be overwhelming. It makes people feel trapped, alone, and unable to see a way forward. When every day is consumed by immediate worries, hope can feel out of reach.
At Off The Fence, we encounter people living with these fears every day. Many arrive at our doors carrying burdens that seem impossible to overcome. Some are facing homelessness. Others are struggling with debt, anxiety, relationship struggles, or the wearing effects of long-term poverty. The future feels uncertain and frightening.
But fear does not have to have the final word.
Through our three support services, we help people move from crisis towards stability and from isolation towards connection. One of the most important ways we do this is through our dedicated Key Workers, who provide practical guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear to those who need it most.
A first meeting with a Key Worker changes the narrative.
Where fear says, "You're facing this alone," our Key Workers say, "We're here with you."
Where fear says, "Nothing will ever change," we help people identify achievable next steps and practical solutions.
Where fear brings confusion and chaos, we help create clarity and a pathway forward.
Where fear steals peace, we help restore hope.
The power of peace in the moment of hardship can be seen from Sam’s story.
“When we first met Sam at Antifreeze, he was facing homelessness, struggling with suicidal thoughts, and feeling hopeless about the future. Through regular support, our team listened, built trust, and walked alongside him during a difficult season. Knowing that there were people who genuinely cared about his wellbeing began to make a difference.
Gradually, Sam's outlook started to change. He told us that the kindness, encouragement, and practical support he received helped him regain confidence and begin to hope for the future again. Today, he is talking about returning to work and exploring volunteering opportunities as a way to reconnect with his community and rediscover a sense of purpose. “
Sam's journey reminds us that lasting change often begins with a simple conversation and the reassurance that someone cares.
